So, Oklahoma Mom, do you include those little children, and oh yes, the old and infirm in those you are so willing to leave aside? When our great country was being settled, folks helped folks - that's how they survived. We are so huge and spread out now, that it is impossible to do it "that way" - your personal charities are to be admired, I have mine, too - but the 'pooling of our resources via taxes' is the best way to be sure the 'least of us' (see matthew 25:34-46) is not abandoned. And I am one who does not choose to "throw the baby out with the bath water".....there will always be cheats who get by (see Patrick J's admission that he underpaid his taxes by $25,000 and brags about it!) but that does not excuse us, as human beings, to copy that as proper behavior.
